Self-righteous is not a compliment. A self-righteous person is proudly sure that their beliefs, attitudes, and morals are the good and right ones — and they make that certainty . The sting is the pride: they do not merely think they are right; they enjoy being the better person, and they look down on people who disagree. Though actually, almost nobody calls themselves self-righteous; it is a word you put on someone else, in arguments, newspapers, and family dinners. Righteous on its own can still be praise (doing what is right). Put self- in front, and it turns into a complaint. It is a fairly strong adjective.
