Self-determination, in this sense, is the right of the people of a country or a people to govern themselves and to choose what kind of government they will have. Nobody outside is supposed to decide that for them. You will hear it in history, law, and : speeches, treaties, news, classroom debates. It is a big, formal word, not a word for everyday . Though actually the same spelling can also be used about one person’s right to make their own life choices — doctors and teachers use that sense — but that is not this entry. Here the “self” is a people, not one student. Older civic writing loves this noun; younger speakers may say “the right to decide for ourselves” and mean something close, though not always the same legal idea.
