Self-denial is when you do not do or have the things you enjoy — food, rest, money, praise, comfort — because you believe you should not, often for moral or religious reasons. A person fasting, giving money away, or sleeping on a hard bed as a kind of training is self-denial. The word is old-fashioned-serious: sermons, life stories, and careful writing use it more than text messages. Though actually, people also stretch it to diets, saving, and “I didn’t buy the shoes.” That everyday stretch is real, but the centre is still “I could have the pleasure, and I say no on purpose,” not “I cannot afford it.” It is not denial meaning “I say it is not true” (denial that you cheated, denial of the facts). Same family of letters, different job. The describing word beside it is self-denying.

組成From self- + denial. Self- is from Old English self, “one’s own person”; denial here is “saying no to” a want, not “saying a fact is false.”
