Self-control is the ability to stay calm and sensible even when you feel very , angry, hungry, scared, or . You want to shout — you don’t. You want a third cake — you wait. It is a quality people praise in children and in adults, at home and at work. The self- means you are the one holding things in check, not a teacher standing over you. Though actually, Control yourself! can sound like a sharp telling-off; the noun self-control is usually kinder, more like a skill you can grow. English can build a verb self-control, but everyday speakers almost always say control yourself or keep your self-control, not “I self-controlled.” You will also hear self-controlled for a person who has this quality. It is not someone else running your life, and it is not the same as being cold. You can feel a lot and still have self-control.
