Self-assembly furniture comes in a box as separate pieces, with screws and a little picture-book of steps, and you put it together at home. Shops like it because the flat box is cheaper to store and send; made the idea ordinary. It is especially British English; in American English people more often say ready-to-assemble, or just that you have to put it together. The 'self' is you, the buyer — not the furniture: the table does not build itself. Though actually, 'self-assembly' can sound as if it will be easy, and then you are still on the floor at midnight with one piece left over. You will see it on price tags and in catalogues more than in spoken chat.
self-assembly 指的是以零件形式賣的家具，箱子裡附有螺絲和圖示步驟，要自己在家裡組裝。它的常見格式是「self-assembly ＿＿」，例如「self-assembly furniture」。商店喜歡這種方式，因為扁平的箱子比較省空間，運送也比較便宜；IKEA 讓這種做法變得很普遍。
