Relating to earthquakes — the shaking and movement of the ground. Scientists talk about 'seismic activity' (earthquakes happening in an area) and use 'seismic waves' to study what's happening deep inside the Earth. The word is also used, quite often, in a non-literal way for anything that causes a huge, shocking change — 'a seismic shift in public opinion' means a massive, sudden change, like an earthquake shaking everything up.
