Segregationist describes ideas, laws, or groups that support keeping people of different races, sexes, or religions separate. A segregationist law is one that tries to keep those groups apart. The same word is also a noun: a segregationist is a person who wants that system, or who fights to keep it. In United States history it is a charged word — you will meet it in lessons about the years when Black Americans fought to use the same schools and buses, and about the people who tried to stop that. It is formal and serious, not a playground word. Though actually, people almost always use it about race, even though sex and religion sit in the dictionary too; if you say “a segregationist” with no extra words, listeners hear “someone who wanted races kept apart.”
