A segregated school or other place can only be used by members of one group — one race, one sex, or one religion. The other groups must go somewhere else. In United States history the word is heavy: segregated schools, buses, and neighbourhoods kept Black and white people apart by law. People also say a school is segregated by sex when only girls, or only boys, may attend. The adjective is serious and rather formal: news, law, and history. Though actually, if someone just says “a segregated school” with no extra words, many listeners hear race first, even though sex and religion are part of the same idea. A place can also be mixed in the written rules and still feel separate in daily life; the adjective names the keeping-apart, not whether people are happy.
