    Sectional describes something divided into, or related to, separate sections or parts, rather than being one whole piece. In furniture, a 'sectional' (often used as a noun in American English) is a large sofa made of several separate pieces that can be arranged in different ways, like an L-shape, and pushed together to fit a room — this furniture meaning is extremely common in the US. Sectional can also describe conflict or division within a group, based on separate factions or regions — 'sectional interests', 'sectional tension' — meaning different sub-groups pulling in different directions rather than working as one.
