A seashell is the empty shell of a small sea animal — the hard outside that is left when the creature is gone. People pick them up on the beach: spiral ones, fan-shaped ones, tiny pink ones. Children collect them; jewellers sometimes use them. The word is just sea + shell. All seashells are shells, but not all shells are seashells: an egg has a shell, a nut has a shell, and those never lived in the sea. In careful talk, a seashell is empty; if the animal is still inside, you have a live , not a souvenir. We usually say seashells in the plural when we mean a handful on the sand.
