A sealant is a thick substance you put on a surface, or into a gap, so that air, water, or dirt cannot get through. People use it around windows, in bathrooms, on roofs, and on machines. It starts soft, then it dries or sets and makes a tight skin. Shops sometimes mix sealant with sealer and even with glue; though actually a sealant is often the paste that fills a gap, like the line around a sink, while a thin paint-on sealer soaks into a surface. This seal is the closing kind — to shut something tight — not the sea animal.
