If something is seaborne, ships carry it, or it arrives by sea. People talk about seaborne trade (goods moving on ships), seaborne supplies, or a seaborne invasion (soldiers coming in by ship). It is a bit formal — news, history, and military writing more than chat. Airborne is the air version: carried by air. Waterborne can mean carried by water, including rivers. Though actually the spelling is the trap: this is borne, “carried”, not born, “came into the world”. Nothing here was “born in the sea”.

- China’s state-run iron ore buyer told the nation’s major steel producers and traders to stop purchasing a second type of ore from BHP Group, as contract talks with the world’s top miners drag on. The directive was made this week by China Mineral Resources Group Co.
