Scrumpy is a strong alcoholic drink made from apples — a kind of cider, but not the clear, sweet, shop kind. It is the rough, often cloudy farm cider of south-west England (Somerset, Devon, and around there), usually stronger than ordinary cider, and it can sneak up on you. The name feels local and a bit rural; people outside Britain may not know it. It is not a children's drink, and it is not apple juice. In a pub you might hear I'll have a pint of scrumpy. Though actually, how 'farmy' and how strong it is depends on the maker: some scrumpy is a brand using the old country name, not a from a barn.
