組成From a dialect form of scrimp, probably from Middle Dutch or Middle Low German schrimpen, 'to shrivel up, shrink', going back to Proto-Germanic *skrimpaną / *skrimbaną. Related to Old English sċrimman, 'to shrink, draw up'. The fruit-stealing sense sits on that 'small / shrivelled' family.
