A scrummage is a scrum in rugby: the moment when the two packs of forwards bind together and push, and the ball is put in between them. Scrum is the short word everyone uses now; scrummage is the older, fuller name you still meet in rule books, old match reports, and some commentary. It can also be a verb: the two sides scrummage, meaning they form that huddle and contest the ball. It belongs to rugby (especially rugby union). American football uses a related-looking word, scrimmage, for a different thing — the play from the line, or a practice game — so the two sports do not mean the same scene. In everyday British talk, if someone is not a rugby person, they will almost always say scrum, not scrummage.
