"Scrimmage" is a word mostly from American football (and used a bit in rugby). It means a practice game or practice play - players run the actual plays against each other, but it's just for training, not a real match that counts. Coaches use "scrimmage" both as a noun ("we had a scrimmage today") and a verb ("the teams scrimmaged for an hour"). Outside of sports, you'll rarely hear this word.
