1. 1

Scratching is a DJ’s way of making new sounds from a record. The record sits on a turntable and plays; with one hand the DJ pushes it quickly forwards and backwards in short moves, while the other hand often works a mixer to cut the sound in and out. That produces a , scratchy sound that is not in the original song. The skill grew with hip-hop in the 1970s and is still part of how DJs play. You will meet this sense in music writing and DJ talk. The same spelling also means the ordinary act of scratching an , or a cat scratching a sofa; in this entry it is the record technique.
