A scratchcard is a small card you buy, usually at a shop or a lottery stand, that gives you a chance to win a prize. Part of the card is covered with a grey or silver coating. You rub that coating off with a coin, and the numbers or pictures underneath tell you whether you have won — often nothing, sometimes a little money, very rarely a lot. It is a cheap, quick gamble, not a skill game. British English uses scratchcard (also written scratch card). American English more often says scratch-off ticket. In Taiwan almost everyone just says 刮刮樂, which began as a product name and became the everyday word for any card of this kind.
