A scraper is a hand tool with a hard, often flat edge. You push or pull it across a surface to rub something off — old paint, ice on a car window, burnt food in a pan, a sticky label on glass. The action is a : not a deep cut, but a rub that lifts a layer. Painters, cooks, and drivers all have their own shapes. It is an ordinary workshop and kitchen word. Though actually, in computer English a scraper is a program that copies information off web pages; that is a later picture of the same idea, “taking stuff off a surface,” but this entry is the physical tool.
