A scorpion is a small animal of warm, often dry places. It looks a bit like an insect, though actually it is closer to a spider: it has eight legs, not six, and a pair of pincers at the front. What people notice is the tail, which curves up over its back and ends in a poisonous sting. Some stings hurt a lot; a few kinds can kill a person, but most are not that dangerous. A cheerleading move is called a scorpion because one foot goes up behind the head and looks like that tail. The star sign Scorpio is named after the animal too.
