Sciatica is the name of the pain itself: a sharp or shooting pain that starts in the lower back or hip and often travels down one leg, following the nerve. People talk of burning, tingling, or a pain that makes it hard to sit or walk. It is a condition, not a bone and not the nerve’s name. In everyday English someone may say “I’ve got sciatica” for any bad back-and-leg pain; a doctor may be more careful about which nerve is involved. The describing word is (“ pain”). Same old hip-root: doctors have used this family of words for the hip and this nerve for a very long time.
組成Late Middle English, from Late Latin sciatica, feminine of sciaticus, from Ancient Greek iskhiadikós, the adjective of iskhíon, “hip.”
