Sciatic is a doctor’s word. It means “to do with the hip,” and more often “to do with the sciatic nerve” — the big nerve that starts in the lower back, runs through the hip, and goes down the back of the leg. When someone has sciatic pain, that nerve is the problem: the pain can shoot, burn, or tingle from the hip into the leg. You will see it in sciatic nerve and sciatic pain. It is almost always a describing word, not the name of the illness. The name of the pain itself is sciatica. Ordinary people say “my back” or “my hip”; a doctor may say sciatic. It is not a word for everyday chat.
組成Borrowed from Middle French sciatique, from Late Latin sciaticus, a variant of ischiadicus, from Ancient Greek iskhiadikós, the adjective of iskhíon, “hip.”
