    A schoolmaster is a male teacher, especially in a private school that parents pay for. In older British English this was an ordinary word for a man who taught in a school; today people usually just say teacher, and schoolmaster sounds old, or like a story set in the past. It is not the same as headmaster, who runs the whole school — though actually some mix those two up, because both have master in them. The master part is the old word for a man in charge, the pair of mistress in . You will still meet it in books, in history, and in the names of old schools.
