    A schmuck is a stupid person — someone who does a foolish thing, or who you think has no sense. Informal American, and it is an insult. In everyday English it can sound almost casual, like calling someone a jerk or an idiot, but it is still meant to sting. You might call yourself a schmuck after a mistake (“I felt like a schmuck”). You would not use it in a polite meeting, in a letter to a teacher, or about someone you respect. Though actually, in the word is much ruder: it is a crude word for a man’s penis, then for a fool. English borrowed the “fool” sense and the sound a little, but the put-down remains. The verb is rare; the noun is the one you will meet.
