Schmaltz is what you call a song, film, or book when love and sadness are poured on so heavily that it starts to feel silly, not serious. Informal. It usually shows you do not quite respect the feelings being sold — the swelling music, the slow tears, the speech that tries to melt you. A little sweetness can be fine; this word is for when it is too thick. Though actually, the older meaning is chicken fat, the rich fat used in some Jewish cooking. English borrowed the “too many feelings” sense from that picture of something spread on thick. In class and in reviews you almost always meet the feelings sense, not the fat in the pan.
