A SCART is a fat, wide plug and socket used to send picture and sound from one box to another — for example from a DVD player to a television. It was very common in Europe for years. One 21-pin connector carried several signals, so you did not need a handful of little red-white-yellow cables. In Taiwan people more often used those AV cables, and later HDMI; SCART never became the everyday plug at home. You still meet it on older European TVs and on some imported kit. It is written in capital letters because it began as the name of a standard, not as an ordinary English word. People also say a SCART lead or a SCART cable for the wire itself.
