A scandalmonger is someone who goes around telling shocking stories about other people, often stories that are not true, or only half true. They do not just hear gossip. They deal in it, the way a seller deals in goods. That is why monger is in the word: a monger is a dealer. Fishmonger is a fish seller and is a normal job word. Warmonger and scandalmonger use the same piece in a bad way. Scandalmonger is as a label, and a bit old-fashioned. Today people more often say a gossip, or someone who spreads . You would not smile and call yourself a scandalmonger.
