A scamp is a child who gets into trouble in a fun way — hiding your keys, making a face, playing a small trick. You say it with a smile. You are not really angry. and storybooks like this word. It feels a little old and a little British, and it is warm, not cruel. You would not call a real thief a scamp. That would sound much too soft. A scamp is naughty, but still a child you like. Adults sometimes call a grown friend a scamp as a joke, when that friend is being cheeky.

組成From Middle Dutch schampen, "to slip away", from Old French escamper, "to run away", from Vulgar Latin *excampāre. The same old line of words gives us escape.
