Sappho is a woman from a very long time ago — the 600s BC — who wrote poems in Greek. She lived on Lesbos, an island in the Aegean Sea. We do not have whole books of hers; we mostly have broken pieces, sometimes only a line or two. Even so, people who care about poetry have loved her for more than two thousand years, and the old Greeks already treated her as one of the greats. Her poems talk about love and strong private feeling: wanting someone, missing someone, being jealous, being happy in a small moment. Some of that love is for women, and that is not a later ; it is in what survives. Later centuries made her a kind of banner for women who love women, and that is why her name still matters so much to lesbians. Though actually, she is a person and a poet first, not a label. She almost certainly wrote about more than one kind of love, and we should not pretend the fragments tell us her whole life. In English her name is always a name, so it takes a capital letter. People say it like SAF-oh.
組成A name, not a word English built from pieces. English borrowed it from Latin Sapphō, and Latin had borrowed it from Ancient Greek Σαπφώ (Sapphṓ). The Greek name itself may be older than Greek — scholars mark it as Pre-Greek — but that is as far as the trail is clear.
