Salzburg is a city in western Austria, in the Alps. English meet it for two reasons that sit on top of each other: Mozart was born there in 1756, and every summer the Salzburg Festival fills the city with opera and concert music. The old town is beautiful and famous; there is a big fortress looking down on it. Though actually, Austrians sometimes get tired of visitors who only know the place from The Sound of Music — the film is set around Salzburg, but it is not a local history lesson. The name is not a pretty sound chosen at random: it is “salt castle,” because the town grew by guarding the salt trade on the river Salzach (a “salt river”). People say Salzburg for the city and also for the wider state around it.
組成From German Salzburg: Salz (salt) + Burg (castle, fort). The river Salzach is Salz + an old word for water/river. The town once protected the salt trade.
