Salisbury is a city in southern England, famous for a huge thirteenth-century cathedral that draws many tourists. The is very tall. The city sits on the edge of Salisbury Plain; is not in the city, but it is not far, so visitor talk often joins the two. Though actually, the same spelling has other lives: the capital of Zimbabwe was once called Salisbury (now ), and in American cooking Salisbury steak is a fried cake of minced beef with gravy, named after a person, not the cathedral. The English city name takes a capital S.
索爾茲伯里(英格蘭南部城市,以大教堂聞名)
組成From Middle English Saresbury, from Old English names such as Searoburh. Speakers took an older British-Latin name, Sorviodūnum / Sorbiodōnum (from a Celtic first part of uncertain origin, perhaps related to a word for flowing water, plus Proto-Celtic *dūnom, “stronghold”), and rebuilt it with English burh, “stronghold,” plus, by folk etymology, searu, “armor.” The r later became l, probably under the influence of Salesbury in Lancashire (from sealh, “willow,” + burh).
