Rwandan is the word for a person from Rwanda, and for things that belong to that country: Rwandan coffee, the Rwandan government, a Rwandan student. Rwanda itself is the country in east-central Africa, with capital Kigali, between Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — though actually it also borders Uganda and Burundi. In 1994 there was a civil war there between Hutu and Tutsi groups, and hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people were killed; that history is part of what the country is known for, but the word Rwandan is not only about that year. It is just the usual -an ending we put on a place name to mean “from there,” the same kind of ending as in American or Korean. We can say “She is Rwandan” or “She is a Rwandan.”
