Rwanda is a country in east-central Africa. Learner books often place it between Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo; though actually it also shares borders with Uganda and Burundi. It is a small, hilly country. The capital is Kigali. In 2014 the population was written as a little over twelve million; the number has grown since then. In 1994 there was a terrible time of killing inside the country. Two groups of people, the Hutu and the Tutsi, were pulled into it. Hutu fighters killed hundreds of thousands of Tutsi people in only a few months, and many people thought the aim was to wipe that group out. Millions fled and lived in camps in other countries. Today Rwanda is its own country again, but that year is still a heavy part of how the world tells its story. We write the name with a capital letter.
