- 1
Ruritanian means “of Ruritania” — that made-up little European kingdom in Anthony Hope’s books. A Ruritanian person would be someone from that story-land; Ruritanian clothes, laws, or adventures belong to it too. Writers also stretch the word: a Ruritanian tale is the old-fashioned kind, with swords, sashes, last-minute rescues, and a palace in a country that is nobody’s real home, even when the place is not named Ruritania at all. It is a word. You will not hear it at the market. Though actually, film and book still like it when they want to say a story feels like those cape-and-kingdom adventures rather than like ordinary life.

- He [Honoré Gabriel Riqueti, comte de Mirabeau] had, it is true, indulged in a sort of Ruritanian flirtation with the queen, seen her secretly, pronounced her very solemnly the "only man" about the king, and made rather a fool of himself in that matter, but his schemes were drawn upon a much larger scale than the scale of the back stairs of the Tuileries.
- These claims were called the Greater Ruritania by the cultivated classes who regarded Kipling, Treitschke, and Maurice Barres as one hundred percent Ruritanian. But the grandiose idea aroused no enthusiasm abroad. So holding this finest flower of the Ruritanian genius, as their poet laureate said, to their hearts, Ruritania's statesmen went forth to divide and conquer.
- 2
Used to describe a fictitious and generic foreign government or person, used to state a general or hypothetical situation.
