1. 1

Ruritania is not a real country, and you will not find it on a map. A British writer, Anthony Hope, made the name up as the setting for his adventure novels, above all The Prisoner of Zenda. In those books it is a small European kingdom of palaces, uniforms, secret plots, and rather old-fashioned romance. Later writers borrowed the name for any invented little European land where that kind of story happens. You will meet it in book talk, reviews, and history of popular fiction, not in the news as a place with borders and a government. Though actually, people sometimes say “a Ruritania” as a joke for a tiny, dressy, make-believe kingdom — they are still talking about a story-shape, not a country you can visit.
