The rupiah is the money of Indonesia. The sign is Rp. It is not the same as the rupee, though the two words are old cousins: both go back to a word for a silver coin. In English we say one rupiah, and in the plural people often still say rupiah (they do not always add -s). You will see very large numbers on prices, because one rupiah is a tiny amount. Though actually, in Taiwan people rarely say a Chinese version of “rupiah” in daily life; they usually call this money 印尼盾, the ready name they already have, even though 盾 is not a translation of the English word. If you say 盧比, a listener will think of India, not Jakarta. So hook the English word rupiah to 印尼盾, and keep rupee for 盧比.
組成Borrowed from Indonesian rupiah, from Pali rūpiya, “silver,” from Sanskrit rūpyaka, “a silver coin,” from rūpya, “wrought silver.” Same old root as rupee and rufiyaa.
