The rupee is the money of India, and also of Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and some other countries. Each country has its own rupee; an Indian rupee is not the same as a Pakistani one, even though they share the name. In shops and news you will see it , and India’s has its own sign, ₹. In English we say one rupee, two rupees. People in Taiwan will know the Indian one best from news and travel. Though actually, the old coins were silver, and the name itself comes from a word for silver that has been worked, or a stamped coin. A sultan in India in the 1540s, Sher Shah Suri, used a Hindustani word for that silver coin; English later borrowed it as rupee. Do not mix it up with Indonesia’s money, which sounds like a cousin but is a different currency with a different name.
組成From Hindustani rūpīya / rūpaya, used by Sher Shah Suri (sultan 1540–1545) for his silver coin, from Sanskrit rūpyaka, “silver coin,” from rūpya, “wrought gold or silver; a stamped coin.” Same old root as rupiah and rufiyaa.
