    To rue something is to wish, often quite deeply, that you had not done it. She rued the day she signed that contract means she looks back and feels the sting of that choice. Rue the day is the set phrase you will meet again and again. The word is old. You will find it in stories and in slightly formal talk; you will not often hear a teenager say I rue that. There is also a noun: rue can mean the feeling itself, sorrow and regret, though that use is even more old-fashioned. In ordinary speech most people just say regret or wish I hadn't. Though actually, English has another rue — a small bitter herb — and that plant name is a different word with a different history. This entry is the wishing you hadn't.
