A rowan is a small tree with leaves and bunches of bright red or orange berries in late summer and autumn. Birds love the berries. People also call it a mountain ash, though it is not a true ash. You see it a lot in northern Britain and other cold places; it is not a common street tree in Taiwan, so students usually meet the word in stories or nature books. In old northern talk, people sometimes planted a rowan near the house because they believed it kept bad luck away. That is an old belief, not a fact, but it tells you the tree felt special. The tree name comes from old northern words that first meant the fruits, and far back it is related to the idea of red. Rowan is also a given name, but that name has a different Irish story (“little red one”); here we mean the tree.
組成Originally Scots and northern English, from Middle English ron, rone, from Old Norse reynir. At first it named the fruits. Related to Norwegian rogn and Danish røn. Ultimately related to the root of red.
