A roomful is as many people or things as a room will hold — a whole room of them. “A roomful of students” means the room is packed with students. Though actually, it does not have to be full to the walls. People say it when they mean “a lot, and all in one room,” the way handful means “about as much as a hand can hold” without anyone getting out a ruler. You cannot put “a roomful” in a bag by itself; it is an amount, a picture of quantity. Writers like it because it shows a crowd faster than “many people in a room.” It is ordinary English, a little vivid, at home in stories and speech.
