ROM is the part of a computer’s memory that keeps instructions and information which should still be there when you turn the machine off. The letters stand for Read-Only Memory: the computer can read what is stored, but you cannot just write over it the way you write on a . That makes it a good place for the first instructions a machine needs when it starts. RAM is the everyday working memory — fast, but it forgets when the power goes. People also say CD-ROM for a disc that already has data on it, which you read but do not change. You can say the letters R-O-M, or one short word, rom.
