    Romania is a country in south-east Europe, with Hungary to the west and the Black Sea to the east. The capital is . After the Second World War it was a communist country; in 1989 there was a revolution, the long-time leader Nicolae Ceausescu was killed, and Romania became a democracy. It joined the European Union in 2007. The name is tied to Roman: people there have long called themselves român, “Roman,” because the language grew out of Latin. Old books give a population of about twenty-two million; that figure is from years ago and has been falling, so do not treat it as a number to quote today. Though actually, Rome is a city in Italy; Romania is its own country — they are not the same place.
