A roll-call is when someone in charge reads a list of names out loud to check who is there. Teachers do it at the start of class; the army, a fire drill, or a meeting of a club may do it too. Each person answers, often with “here” or “present.” The roll in this word is not bread and not an actor’s part: it is an old name for a list of names, from the days when names were written on a roll of paper. You can take / have / hold the roll-call. It feels official and a little old-fashioned in casual talk — a teacher might just say she’s taking attendance — though actually the noun is still the clear word for the reading-out itself.
roll-call 是由負責的人把名單上的名字一個個唸出來，確認誰到了。老師在上課一開始通常會點名，軍隊、消防演練或社團聚會也可能這樣做。被唸到的人會回答，常見的是「here」或「present」。
這裡的 roll 不是麵包，也不是演員的角色，而是名單的舊說法，源自以前名字是寫在一卷紙上的時候。固定搭配有 take、have 或 hold 這幾個動詞，像「take／have／hold the roll-call」，都是點名的意思。這個詞聽起來比較正式，帶一點老派；日常口語裡，老師可能只會說在點名，但若要指點名這件事本身，帶連字號的 roll-call 仍然是最清楚的說法。
