Roan is a colour word for a horse whose coat mixes white hairs in with the coloured ones, so the body looks lighter, dusty, or a bit grey — not one clean colour. A red roan (sometimes called strawberry roan) mixes reddish-brown with white; a blue roan mixes black or dark hair with white and can look blue-grey from far away. You can say a roan mare, or call the animal a roan. Though actually, it is not a breed, and it is not the same as a grey horse, whose dark coat as it gets older; a true roan keeps coloured hairs mixed with white, and the head and legs often stay darker. It is horse and farm talk, not everyday city talk. People sometimes use it for cattle too, but English almost always means the horse.
