The roadway is the part of a road that vehicles drive on — cars, buses, — the hard strip for traffic, not the path at the side for people walking. Signs and safety talk like this word: stay off the roadway, something is blocking the roadway. In ordinary speech most people just say the road. In American English the walking part is the sidewalk; in British English that walking part is the pavement. Though actually, British road people also say for the driving part, so roadway can feel a little more American or official. And when the word was first put together, road still meant riding, so a roadway was a way for riding on, not yet a fancy name for a street.

組成From Middle English *rodeway, *radewey (attested in radewey-stile), equivalent to road + way. Road had the early sense of riding when the compound was formed, so it originally meant a way for riding on.
