A road test is a check you do by actually driving a vehicle on the road, not just looking at it in a garage. A mechanic may take a car out to feel the brakes, the steering, and the engine in real conditions, and to see that it is safe. Some places also use a road test as part of an official check before a vehicle may go on the road. Journalists road-test a new car too — they use it in real life and then say how it went — and people stretch the word to phones, bags, even ideas: try it out in the real world, not only on paper. You will often see it written as two words, road test, or with a as a verb, road-test. The core picture is always “try it on the road”.
