If something is risible, it is so foolish or weak that it deserves to be laughed at. A risible excuse; a risible claim. The laugh is a cold, educated one: you are not sharing a joke; you are putting the thing down as silly. The word is formal and a little . In ordinary talk people say ridiculous, laughable, or just silly. Though actually, an older sense is simply “able to laugh” — humans as the animal that laughs. You may still meet that in very old writing. In newspapers and essays today, risible almost always means “deserves a laugh because it is foolish.” It can sound sharp.
