Picture the strip of floor pressed right against the ropes of a boxing ring, or the edge of a circus circle. It is the last place you can stand before you would be inside the show itself. Every use of ringside can be read as growing out of that one strip: the place, a seat in it, and the word put in front of a noun to mean something belongs there.
