    Rightwards means toward the right — almost always an adverb. The crowd moved rightwards. British English likes the extra -s on these direction words (rightwards, backwards, afterwards); American English more often drops it and rightward. The uses match rightward: a physical move to the right, and, in news, drifting to the right. Though actually, in everyday talk people still just say “to the right.” The -wards form sounds a little more like a path of movement than a still position.
