When a company rightsizes, it cuts jobs so the business is supposedly “the right size” — fewer people, lower costs. Managers like the word because it sounds careful and sensible, like finding a better fit, not like hurting anyone. Though actually, in real life it almost always means the same as downsize: people lose their work. Staff, unions, and newspapers often treat it as a polite mask. You can rightsize a company, or rightsize its operations. It is slick business English from the late twentieth century. A student who hears the pretty word should still ask: who is being sent home?
